For nearly two decades, Darius Gerulis – Atomai has been an architect of sonic atmospheres, navigating a path from the tactile energy of alternative post-rock, to the precise, cinematic depths of ambient and electronic composition.
ATOMAI
His journey began with the six-piece Kaunas-based instrumental post-rock band slowattack, grounding his roots in live instrumentation before expanding into the solitary, texture-heavy space drone & ambient worlds of the Picturesque Episodes and darker, albeit more poppy rhythmic experiments of King Sleep and Mineral People.
ATOMAI
His discography reads like a travelogue of this evolution, marked by unseen milestones, local and international, such as the release on the US-based Wise Owl Records and the rare physical CD edition of Naktingalų Giesmės (Songs of the Nightingales), dedicated to M. K. Čiurlionis.
These works established a signature sound that bridges the imaginative organic and the complex synthetic, with a heart of raw emotion, a quality that brought his music to the stages of major regional festivals including Supynės, LOFTAS Fest, Yaga the Gathering, Tundra, and the international Tallinn Music Week festival.
ATOMAI
Today, this journey culminates in Atomai, a project that synthesizes his history into a cohesive blend of ambient, pop, and electronics. Often anchored by the ethereal vocals and lyrics of a long-time collaborator Eglė Gelažiūtė-Pranevičienė known as Tamsaulė, Atomai explores the dualities of his self-perception through the conceptual trilogy of Nematomi (Invisible), Matomi (Visible), and the expansive Permatomi (Transparent) albums.
Currently Atomai is exploring the endless revisiting of past creative ghosts and unborn future sonic waves: with ambient-focused albums SIGNALAI 3 and SIGNALAI 4, he continues to search for himself in sound: a dialogue between boundless organic emotion and digital precision.
